CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior running back DeRon Brown (Galax, VA) rushed for 207 yards on 25 carries and scored four touchdowns to tie a school record as host MIT posted a 48-15 victory over Western New England College in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division contest Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Steinbrenner Stadium.
Senior running back Robert Utz (Cockeysville, MD) added 144 yards on 23 attempts as the Engineers raised their overall record to 4-3 and 2-2 in the division.
Brown and Utz combined for 351 of the team's 435 yards rushing as Tech finished with 514 total yards.
The game started with touchdowns on the first two plays from scrimmage as WNEC senior running back Jordan Capitanio (Torrington, CT) bolted 88 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game. He then caught a two-point conversion pass from sophomore backup quarterback and holder Pat Meffen (Springfield, MA) for a quick 8-0 lead.
Utz answered with a 66-yard touchdown run on MIT's first play and after the Golden Bears lost a fumble on the enusing kickoff, Brown capped a nine-play, 48-yard drive with his first TD from two-yards out for a 14-8 lead just 5:02 into the game.
Brown added a 22-yard score later in the opening quarter, a 21-yard touchdown in the second period, and a 67-yard run that gave the Engineers a 34-8 lead only 45 seconds into the third quarter.
Junior quarterback Justn Walz (Groton, CT) scored on a seven-yard run with 2:46 remaining in the third period for the Golden Bears' final points. He was 11-for-22 passing for 92 yards and suffered two interceptions while being sacked three times.
Capitanio finished with 93 yards on seven carries as WNEC gained 32 yards in the contest.
Western New England College falls to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
