SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In the final home match of the regular season, the Western New England College women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over visiting Regis Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 7).
Senior captain Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, PA) led the way by capturing both her matches, taking a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles and teaming with freshman Jessica Haffner (Suffield, CT) for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Haffner also was the winner in her No. 4 singles match.
Junior Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, CT) won two matches at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with sophomore Ashley Czelatka (Southampton, NY).
Junior Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) and freshman Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, MA) had an exciting match prevailing 9-8 (7-2 in the tie-breaker) at the No. 1 doubles flight.
Regis Pride sophomores Megan McCarthy (Norfolk, MA) and Jessica Jeffery (Delray Beach, FL) took the top two singles matches, respectively.
Western New England College has a 7-5 record after winning for the seventh time in its last eight outings. The Golden Bears are 5-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) and still in the hunt for a home playoff match with two contests remaining.
Regis falls to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
