Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore running back Rob LaRiviere-Tougas (Easthampton, MA) rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Salve Regina to a 28-14 victory over Western New England College Saturday (Nov. 1) in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division game.
Junior quarterback Jeff St. Onge (Kingston, NH) added 225 yards passing and also ran for 65 yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks evened their record at 4-4 and 3-3 in the division.
Western New England College led 7-0 after the opening period on a one-yard run by junior running back Chris Winn (Norwich, CT), which capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive.
LaRiviere-Tougas scored from seven yards out on the second play of the second quarter as the teams took a 7-7 tie at halftime.
In the third period, LaRiviere-Tougas scampered six yards at the 4:40 mark to give the Seahawks their first lead of the contest.
WNEC came right back to knot the game when senior running back Jordan Capitanio (Torrington, CT) ran 18 yards on fourth-and-two for a touchdown with 1:59 remaining in the quarter. He finished with 126 yards on 18 carries.
Salve Regina added the deciding touchdowns in the final quarter on a one-yard run by St. Onge with 11:13 left and 58-yard run by LaRiviere-Tougas with 7:48 remaining in the game.
St. Onge, who finished with 291 yards, completed 15-of-22 passes with an interception. Junior receiver Ben Hall (Conway, NH) had a game-high six receptions for 98 yards while senior receiver Jason Giordano (Wolcott, CT) caught four passes for 75 yards.
LaRiviere-Tougas carried the ball 28 times and had a 7.0 average as he and St. Onge combined for 262 of the team's 277 yards rushing. The Seahawks finished with 502 yards in total offense.
Western New England College managed 323 yards as junior quarterback Justin Walz (Groton, CT) completed 12-of-17 passes for 102 yards with an interception. He was injured in the second period, but returned midway through the fourth quarter.
Defensively, junior linebacker Nolan McGarrity (Verona, NJ) led Salve Regina with 13 tackles while junior back Zach Szymanski (Dracut, MA) had 10 tackles and an interception. Junior linebacker Brian Bernarducci (Pleasantville, NY) also compiled 10 stops.
WNEC sophomore linebacker Justin Bailey (Northborough, MA) had 12 tackles for the Golden Bears while sophomore strong safety Joe Begnal (Waterbury, CT) had 11. Junior tackle Chris Sormanti (South Hadley, MA) added 10 tackles with a sack. Junior back Nathan Captianio (Torrington, CT) had an interception.
Before the game, Western New England College honored Jordan Capitanio along with place-kicker James Farrell (East Longmeadow MA) and offensive lineman Scott Walch (Bristol, VT) during “Senior Day” activities.
The Golden Bears now have a 2-7 record and 2-4 mark in the league.
