SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Caitlin Powers (Scotia, NY) scored a career high 19 points to lead the second-seeded Western New England College women's basketball team to a 77-52 victory over seventh-seeded University of New England in a quarterfinal round game of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament Tuesday evening (Feb. 26) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Powers connected on 9-of-12 shots from the field and pulled down five rebounds as the Golden Bears improved their record to 17-9. Her previous high this season was eight points against Regis on February 12.
TCCC Player-of-the-Year senior guard Jen Dabrowski (Plainville, CT) tossed in a game high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds while handing out four assists.
Also scoring in double figures were freshman Taryn Belowsky (New Haven, CT) with 11 points and senior guard Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) with 10 points and a game high five assists. Belowsky was named TCCC Co-Rookie-of-the Year Monday night while DeRosa was voted the conference Senior Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year.
Western New England College led 41-28 at halftime and upped the margin to 47-29 with 16:35 left in the game after Powers scored the team's first three baskets of the half.
Junior guard Allison Gamache (Dudley, MA) led the Nor'easters with nine points while junior forward Sara Pelkey (Barre, VT) and freshman guard April Mroz (Somersworth, NH) each added eight points.
UNE ends its season with a 13-13 record.
