Western New England College captures TCCC doubleheader over Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Western New England College softball team banged out 23 hits in posting a 5-3, 8-4 doubleheader victory over host Roger Williams Saturday (Mar. 29) at Paolino Field.

The Golden Bears went over the .500 mark with an 8-6 record, including a 3-1 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

Sophomore shortstop Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) had three hits, a run, and two RBI to lead the 10-hit attack in the opener.

WNEC rallied for the win by scoring three unearned runs in the seventh inning. Senior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) had a sacrifice fly followed by run-scoring singles by senior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) and Post.

Sophomore pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) allowed five hits, struck out five, and walked only one in raising her record to 4-3.

Western New England College collected 13 hits in the second contest with Pacelli leading the way with two singles, a double, three RBI, and a run.

Junior pitcher Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) had a big day on the mound and at the plate. Despite giving up 11 hits, she picked-up her second win in three decisions after fanning three with no walks. DeGennaro also had two hits, including a lead-off homer in the third.

Junior centerfielder Brenna Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH) (single, double, 2 RBI, run), sophomore leftfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) (2 hits, walk), and freshman first base player Trish Breault (Milville, MA) (single, double, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit performances.

Roger Williams senior shortstop Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, MA) enjoyed a big day at the plate by going 6-for-7 with three doubles and four runs. Sophomore designated player Samantha Teves (Somerset, MA) went 4-for-6, which included a double and three RBI.  

The Hawks fall to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
