LONDONDERRY, N.H. - Junior pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) fired her second no-hitter in a week as the Western New England College softball team defeated New England College 10-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 12) at Londonderry High School.
Bower was terrific striking out seven and walking only two in seven inningsin raising her record to 9-5. She had a five-inning no-hitter against Regis on April 6.
The Golden Bears totaled out 12 hits and scored six runs in the second inning for a 7-0 lead.
Playing in her home state, junior centerfielder Brenna Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH) had a single and two-run triple along with a pair of runs.
Junior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) also had two singles and two RBI while senior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) also collected two hits with a run.
The Pilgrims used a six-run inning of their own for an 8-7 upset win in the second contest.
Catcher Amanda Lester led the home team by going 2-for-4 with four RBI highlighted by a three-run homer in the pivotal second frame.
WNEC compiled 11 hits with Fitzgerald going 3-for-3 with a run and RBI to complete a successful day at the plate.
Senior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) went 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. She also had a double in the opener.
DeGennaro added a single, double, and pair of runs while freshman first base player Trish Breault (Milville, MA) added a single and two RBI.
Western New England College rallied with three runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs, but couldn't score.
The Golden Bears are now 15-10 overall and 8-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
New England College improves to 4-16 and 3-9 in the conference.
