SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior shortstop/designated player Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) had four hits and six RBI in two games as the Western New England College softball team defeated visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology 8-0 and 10-2 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon (Apr. 13).
DeGennaro went 2-for-4 with three RBI in each game and slugged a two-homer (her third of the season) in the sixth inning that ended the opener because of the mercy rule.
WNEC scored four runs in the first inning highlighted by a three-run homer by senior catcher Allison Glassick (Newport, RI). It was the fourth round-tripper of the season for Glassick who was competing against her sister Ashley Glassick, the left-fielder for Wentworth.
Senior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) and sophomore second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) also had two hits and scored a run.
Junior pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) gave up only one hit, struck out 14, and walked five in raising her record to 10-5.
In the second contest, senior Alex Paterson (Deep River, CT) had the five-inning complete game victory giving up three hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. She is now 4-3 this season.
DeGennaro's two-run single in the sixth ended the game because of the mercy rule.
Post had a two-run double to highlight a four-run third inning, which gave the Golden Bears a 4-1 lead. She also scored two runs.
Glassick scored two runs and had a RBI groundout.
Ashley Glassick had a single and RBI that pulled the visitors to within 4-2 in the third.
Western New England College is now 17-10 overall and 10-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Wentworth remains winless at 0-20, 0-16 in the conference.
