CIt's a doubleheader sweep for Western New England College over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Riding the strong right arm of junior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA), the Western New England College softball team swept a doubleheader by the scores of 2-0 and 6-5 in 12 innings over Salve Regina Saturday afternoon (Apr. 19).

Bower was the winnng pitcher in both contests in raising her season total to 13-5.

She tossed a two-hitter in the opener with 13 strikeouts and four walks.

Senior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) had a RBI double in the fourth and junior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to account for the runs.

In the second game, Bower went seven innings in relief giving up three unearned runs and two hits. She struck out six and walked two.

WNEC scored twice in the 12th with a run-scoring triple by senior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) and RBI single by sophomore shortstop/second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) the big hits.

Sophomore rightfielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) hit her fourth homer of the season.

Western New England College has a 20-10 record and 12-4 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

Salve Regina falls to 15-17 and 12-6 in the league.
