DUDLEY, Mass. - The Nichols College softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 6-5 victory over Western New England College in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon (Apr. 3).
The Bison (9-6) also took the opener 2-1 to remain undeated in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-0 mark.
WNEC sophomore leftfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) had three hits, a stolen base, and a run in the nightcap while senior catcher Allison Glassick (Newport, RI) knocked in four runs with a single and double.
The Golden Bears took a 5-1 lead into the final inning before the hosts bounced back with seven hits capped by a two-run, one-out single by sophomore catcher Lauren Lombardo (Wolcott, CT).
The first game was a pitcher's duel between WNEC junior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) and Nichols freshman Tiffany Hassett (Oxford, MA). Both fanned nine batters in six innings.
Bower, however, had one bad pitch that sophomore second base player Loren Rozanski (Plainvile, CT) belted for a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Western New England College scored an unearned run in the sixth, but couldn't solve Rozanski who gave up two hits and senior Lauren Person (Vernon, CT) who retired the side in order in the seventh for the save.
Freshman designated player Angela Monaco (Monroe, CT) had both hits for the Golden Bears who fall to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
