SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The mark of a good team is to bounce back from a tough loss and that's what the Western New England College softball team did Saturday in capturing a 9-1, 5-1 doubleheader win over visiting Gordon College.

The Golden Bears dropped a pair of one-run decisions (2-1 and 6-5) at Nichols on Thursday, but were impressive against the Fighting Scots collecting 24 hits and eight stolen bases.

WNEC had 13 hits and three home runs in the opener as junior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a round-tripper.

Sophomore left-fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer. She also stole three bases in the twinbill.

Senior catcher Allison Glassick (Newport, RI) slugged a three-run homer that ended the contest in the sixth because of the mercy rule.

Junior pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) gave up only five hits and struck out seven with two walks to improve to 6-4.

Western New England College compiled 11 hits in the second game to support a fine two-hit pitching performance by senior Alex Paterson (Deep River, CT) who fanned four with three walks to raise her record to 3-2.

DeGennaro, senior second base player Ninelle Bushmich (Woburn, MA), and freshman first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) all had two hits.

WNEC climbs to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

Junior third base player Lindsay Knuckles (Charlotte, NC) had a homer in the opener and single in the second game. Sophomore first base player/pitcher Sarah Grimes (Terryville, CT) had a single in the first game and RBI single in the second contest.

Gordon drops to 4-14 and 3-5 in the league.
