WALTHAM, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team saw its season come to an end with a pair of losses to host Brandeis (6-0) and Simmons (6-5) at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship on Saturday (May 10).
Senior pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, NJ) allowed only two hits and struck out 10 with no walks in the opener. She also had a two-run triple in the first and single in three at-bats. Sophomore catcher Erin Ross (Manalapan, NJ) added a double and a two-run homer that gave the top-seeded Judges a 5-0 lead in the third inning.
Junior leftfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) and sophomore second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) each singled for the fourth-seeded Golden Bears.
Brandeis (36-9-1) will meet second-seeded Keene State in a winners' bracket contest at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (May 11).
In the second game, senior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) walloped a three-run homer to center that gave the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. She also singled in her final at-bat.
Senior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) smacked a two-run homer to right in her final at-bat that extended the margin to 5-1 in the sixth.
Senior catcher Allison Glassick (Newport, RI) had a single, double, and run.
Junior pitcher Laura Bowers (Hudson, MA) took the losses in both outings as her record fell to 20-10.
Third-seeded Simmons (33-11) tied the game with four runs in the bottom oif the sixth and senior first base player Natalie West (East Bridgewater, MA) had the game-winning walk-off single with no outs in the seventh. Sophomore designated player Leah Derderian (Boylston, MA) had a solo homer to center in the second for the first run of the game.
The Sharks meet either Brandeis or Keene State in a losers' bracket game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (May 11).
Western New England College finished with a 29-16 record this spring.
