MILTON, Mass. - Senior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) scored 12 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as the Western New England College men's basketball team upset defending The Commonwealth Coast Conference champion Curry 67-61 in the league opener for both squads Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10).

Senior forward Kyle Fedette (Wallingford, VT) also starred with game highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

Maynard, the 17th player in Golden Bears' history to reach the milestone, drained a pair of three-pointers for 6-4 lead almost four minutes into the contest and the Golden Bears never trailed the rest of the way. He sank a free throw following a technical foul with 59 seconds left in the game for his milestone point.

Western New England College led 31-26 at halftime and held a 14-point margin (54-40) with 8:44 left in game before the Colonels closed the gap down the stretch.

The Golden Bears' reserves combined for 24 points with junior guard Paul Kennedy (Longmeadow, MA) and sophomore forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) each scoring seven points. Thomka also had five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Curry had three players in double figures, led by freshman guard Kyle Gerry (Brockton, MA) with 15 points. Freshman forward Gerald Cohen (Roxbury, MA) added 14 points while junior guard Mark Mastrullo (Billerica, MA) netted 13.

Senior guard Quashed Simmons (Paterson, NJ) had a solid outing with nine points and eight rebounds. He and Maynard hail from the same hometown, but attended different high schools.

Both teams have 3-9 records.
