Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) led three players in double figures with 18 points as nationally-ranked Amherst posted a 70-44 victory over Western New England College in a non-league men's basketball game Tuesday evening (Jan. 27) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The win was the sixth in seven contests for the Lord Jeffs who improved their record to 15-2. Amherst is ranked 16th in both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III and d3hoops.com polls.
Senior forward Mike Holsey (Potomac, MD) and junior forward Steven Wheeler (Bloomington, MN) each added 10 points. Holsey also pulled down a game high eight rebounds.
Amherst broke a 2-2 tie with an 11-0 run capped by a Wheeler jumper just 3:46 into the game. The Lord Jeffs held a 32-18 advantage at halftime and were never threatened in the second half.
Senior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) led the Golden Bears with eight points and six rebounds. Junior forwards Mike Booker (Springfield, MA) and Brendan Murphy (West Springfield, MA), and sophomore forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) each added seven points
The visitors also received fine performances from freshman forward David Waller (Tampa, FL) who had eight points and six rebounds, and senior guard Glenn Wong (Leverett, MA) who netted six points with six rebounds coming off the bench.
Amherst shot 45.9% from the field and held a 44-34 edge off the boards.
Western New England College (4-12) made only 28.8% of its field goal attempts.
