SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College women's tennis team put the finishing touches on a terrific regular season with a 9-0 victory over Curry Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10).
The win gave the Golden Bears an 11-3 record, including an 8-3 mark for fourth place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Senior
Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, CT) dropped only a single point in winning her No. 4 singles match to complete a perfect season at 14-0. She was 12-0 in that flight and 2-0 at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore
Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, MA) had a 6-1-, 6-1 win in the fifth position and ended with a 13-1 record (11-1 at No. 5 singles and 2-0 at No. 4).
Senior co-captain
Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) compiled a 9-5 record at No. 2 seconds after her 6-3, 6-2 victory today.
Freshman
Linda Mustafa (Chicopee, MA) enjoyed a successful rookie campaign by going 8-4 at the no. 3 singles position.
The Golden Bears celebrated "Think Pink Day" by wearing pink tee-shirts during the match to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The month of October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month of the National Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Fourth-seeded Western New England College will host fifth-seeded Roger Williams in a quarterfinal match of the conference tournament at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 13). Both teams finished with the same conference records, but WNEC earned the home court advantage after defeating the Hawks 5-4 back on Sept. 26.
