SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After 411 points, the Western New England College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in the opening round of the Springfield Tom Hay Invitational Friday night (Oct. 9).
Plymouth State posted a 3-2 win over the Golden Bears in the first match by the scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, and 15-11.
Junior outside hitter
Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) had a great outing with 17 kills and a .317 hitting percentage. She also had 13 digs.
Senior outside hitter
Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) contributed 13 kills and 10 digs while junior middle blocker
Lauren Landri (New Canaan, CT) chipped-in with 10 kills and seven digs.
Junior setter
Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) also played well with 40 assists and 10 digs.
WNEC bounced back for a 3-2 decision over Westfield State in a back-and-forth match, 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 13-25, and 17-15.
Boes paced the win with 42 assists and 17 digs while compiling three kills and three service aces.
Cervone led the attack with 18 kills and 25 digs (both season highs) while Shomo had 12 and Landi seven.
Junior libero
Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) had 28 digs and four service aces.
Western New England College improves is record to 16-7.
Host Springfield posted a 3-0 win over Westfield State, then suffered a 3-2 loss to Plymouth State that ended its 10-match winning streak.
