PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The best season in Western New England College women's volleyball history came to an end with a 3-1 loss against host Plymouth State in a semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-16 before the Golden Bears came back for a 25-18 win the third set. PSU broke away for a 25-12 decision in the fourth set.
Senior
Eliza Badeau (Foster, RI) led Plymouth State with 21 kills while sophomore
Meghan Sullivan (Marlton, NJ) had 18 kills.
Sophomore
Alex Avery (Milton, NH) led the defense with 18 digs. Senior
Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, CT) finished with 50 assists.
Western New England College received a double-double performance from senior
Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) who totaled 14 kills and 10 digs in her final collegiate match.
Cervone is scheduled to play in the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic Sunday (Nov. 15) at UMass Boston.
Also for the Golden Bears, junior
Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) contributed eight kills while junior
Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) added 12 digs.
Junior
Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) had a solid outing with nine digs and 29 assists.
Western New England College, the fourth seed in the tournament, finished its season with a 27-10 record that was a school record for wins.
Third-seeded Coast Guard upset the top-seeded Panthers (32-6) by the score of 3-1 in the championship match.
