Western New England College reaches .500 mark with non-conference win over Elms

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior guard Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, NH) led three players in double figures with 15 points as the Western New England College women's basketball team posted a 65-50 non-conference victory over Elms Tuesday night (Dec. 1) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Junior forward Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while freshman guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) also netted 12 points for the Golden Bears who were playing for the first time in nine days.

WNEC led 38-19 at the break before Elms used a 13-5 run to open the second half to get within 43-32 following a basket by freshman guard Jen Normandie (Westford, MA) with 12:07 left.

Western New England College took control with McCormick making a left-handed hook in the lane for a 54-37 advantage at the 7:35 mark. The Golden Bears maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way.

Senior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) had a double-double for the Blazers with game highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds, along with a pair of blocked shots. Senior guard Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown, MA) finished with seven points and five rebounds. Normandie chipped-in with six points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Golden Bears received a big lift from its reserves who tallied 24 points with junior guard Loren Stock (Rocky Hill, CT) scoring eight points and freshman center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) contributing six points and five rebounds.

Al-Darraji also had four rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and two assists in a fine all-around effort. Savino pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists.

Western New England College shot only 29.8% from the field, but converted 28-of-34 free throws (82.4%) with Savino going a perfect 10-for-10.

Elms outscored the Golden Bears 21-17 from the field, but made only 6-of-13 charity shots and committed 24 turnovers.

WNEC evens its record at 2-2 while the Blazers slip to 1-3.
