CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It was another doubleheader split for the Western New England College softball team at the Gene Cusic Classic Monday (March 16).
The Golden Bears rallied for a 6-4 win over Worcester State in nine innings in the opener before falling to Wisconsin-Superior 9-3 in the second contest.
In the first game, WNEC scored twice in the seventh to send the game into extra innings and added the winning runs in the ninth.
Sophomore first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) had two singles and three RBI. She plated the go-ahead run in the ninth with a single and scored a big insurance run on a RBI single by junior centerfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA).
A couple of freshmen helped key the win as third base player Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) had a single and double while scoring twice. Leftfielder Mallory Householder (Ellington, CT) also had two hits and a run.
Junior pitcher Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) gained the win in relief.
Western New England College managed only three hits against UW-Superior scoring all its runs in the fourth.
Lempicki knocked in the first run with a double.
Western New England College is 3-3 during the tournament while Superior improves to 2-4.
This was the season opener for Worcester State.
