SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team ran its winning streak to eight games with a 7-6, 6-2 doubleheader sweep of visiting Nichols Tuesday (Mar. 31).
The Golden Bears raised their record to 11-4 overall and remained unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 4-0 mark.
In the opener, freshman designated player Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) blasted a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the winning hit after the visitors took a one-run lead in the top of the inning.
Junior right-fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, CT) returned to the lineup for the first time this season and went 2-for-2 with a walk and run-batted-in.
Sophomore catcher Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) also had two hits and scored a run.
Senior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) pitched the first six innings and received the win (her third in five decisions).
Junior Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) retired all three batters in the seventh for the save.
Lospinuso came back in the second contest and went six innings allowing seven hits and a pair of unearned runs to move her record to 5-1.
Farese had a single, sacrifice fly, and two RBI while sophomore first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) had a pair of hits and a run scored.
Junior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) contributed a RBI triple and also scored a run.
Freshman leftfielder Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) chipped-in with a pair of singles.
Nichols received three hits apiece from junior second base player Loren Rozanski (Plainville, CT), junior catcher Lauren Lombardo (Wolcott, CT), and freshman shortstop Savannah Thibeault (Marlborough, MA) in the twinbill.
Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, MA) had a two-run homer in the opener for the Bison (5-11, 3-3 TCCC).
