Salve Regina blanks Western New England College twice in conference showdown

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, CT) tossed a pair of shutouts as the Salve Regina softball team blanked host Western New England College 1-0 and 2-0 Saturday afternoon (April 18).

Jakiela, a right-hander, allowed only five hits in the opener striking out 15 and walking four. She fired a six-hitter in he second contest giving up six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in raising her record to 20-12.

The Seahawks scored their only run in the first game when freshman shortstop Kristen Parolise (Hamden, CT) doubled to lead-off the inning. She scored on a RBI single by senior first base player Katie Vieira (Dartmouth, MA).

Senior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) was the hard-luck losing pitcher allowing only those two hits while striking out five with no walks.

The Golden Bears had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh before Jakiela struck out the final two hitters.

In the nightcap, Salve Regina scored both its runs in the first on a RBI double by Parolise and run-scoring single by Jakiela.

Western New England College freshman third base player/pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) had three hits in the twinbill while junior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) and sophomore first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) each had hits in both games.

Lempicki turned in a fine pitching effort giving up only three hits while striking out six and walking one.

Junior Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) allowed only one hit and fanned one in two innings.

Salve Regina improves to 20-13-1 overall and 14-3-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

The Golden Bears fall to 18-9 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
