BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Western New England College softball team returned to its winning ways with an 8-2, 6-2 doubleheader sweep over the University of New England Sunday afternoon (April 19) at Claude Dubois Field.
The victories gave the Golden Bears (who dropped two against Salve Regina on Saturday) a 20-9 overall record and 11-3 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).
Freshman designated player/pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) led the way with a pair of hits and run scored in the opener before tossing a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and only two walks in the second game.
WNEC jumped to an early 5-0 lead after three innings in the first game as senior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) and junior Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) combined on a six-hitter. Bower (8-5) went the first five innings giving up a run and four hits while striking out four and walking two.
Sophomore catcher Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) had a single, double, run scored, and a pair of runs-batted-in.
Junior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) and sophomore first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) each had two hits with a run scored.
Senior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) chipped-in with a double and two RBI.
Post had three hits (including a triple) in the second contest along with two runs scored and two RBI.
Breault, DeGennaro, and Gauvin each contributed two hits for the Golden Bears who scored five times in the fourth and three runs in the seventh.
For the Nor'easters, junior shortstop Lauren Webb (Jericho, VT) had a single, double, and RBI in the first game while freshman catcher Ashley Gott (Winterport, ME) had two hits and a RBI in the second contest.
The University of New England falls to 19-10-1 and 10-9-1 in the conference.
