Western New England College opens TCCC season with win over Roger Williams and loss to Endicott

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College women's volleyball team opened play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 3-1 win over Roger Williams in its first match Saturday (Sept. 19) in the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The game scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-27, and 25-20.

The Golden Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to Endicott in the third match of the day by the scores of 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 14-25, and 15-7.

In the opener, senior outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) led WNEC with 13 digs and 12 kills. Junior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) contributed 34 assists while junior libero Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) added 28 digs.

Western New England College (7-6) rallied from a two-game deficit to tie Endicott, but the Gulls used an 8-0 run in the fifth game to take the victory.

Senior Steph Wiese (Higganum, CT) led the Gulls (6-4) with 14 kills, 14 digs, and a service ace. Sophomore right side hitter Elyse Babour (Greenville, RI) totaled 12 kills and freshman right side hitter Jessica Kennedy (Avon, CT) 10. Junior setter Ally Murphy (Gilford, NH) chipped-in with 25 assists.

Cervone again paced the home team with eight kills and 16 digs while junior outside hitter Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) contributed eight kills, eight digs, and four service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Bitters (Greenfield, MA) added eight kills and 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Lauren Landri (New Canaan, CT) had eight kills and three blocks.

Roger Williams blanked Endicott 3-0 victory in the middle match by the scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 26-24. Four players had seven kills apiece for the Hawks (7-5). They were senior middle hitter Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, NY), junior middle hitter Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, CT), junior outside hitter Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, NH), and freshman outside hitter Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamstead, CT).

Wiese led Endicott with 10 kills, five digs, and four service aces.
