PAXTON, Mass. – The Western New England College women's tennis team defeated Anna Maria, 9-0, in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday evening (Oct. 9) at the Paxton Sports Center.
This was the second straight shutout win for the Golden Bears who are 6-7 overall and 5-6 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The AMCATS end their season at 2-12 overall and 1-10 in the conference.
WNEC captured all six singles matches in straight sets with juniors
Caitlin Hughes (Springfield, MA) (No. 3 singles),
Jessica Haffner (Suffield, CT) (No. 5), and
Amanda Ide (Hamden, CT), (No. 6) all gaining 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Also winning were juniors
Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, MA) and
Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, MA) at the No. 1 and No 2 positions, respectively, and sophomore
Linda Mustafa (Chicopee, MA) at the No. 4 flight.
In doubles action, DeSimone and Hughes posted an 8-2 decision at the No. 1 spot, Barbarisi and Mustafa an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position, and Haffner and junior
Lori Pagliano (Milford, CT) an 8-1 verdict at the No. 3 spot.
Western New England College earned the seventh seed in the conference playoffs and will visit second-seeded Roger Williams (10-4, 10-1 TCCC) at 2:00 pm Tuesday (Oct. 12) in a quartyerfinal round match.
