SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward
Kaylyn Smith (Rensselaer, NY) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in her first appearance in over a year as the Western New England College women's basketball team posted a 62-41 victory over Gordon Saturday (Feb. 13) during Girls and Womens in Sports Day.
The Golden Bears, who jumped to a 13-1 lead, raised their record to 14-8 and 6-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Fighting Scots drop to 9-14 and 2-9 in the league.
This was the first career start for Smith (a four-year player) who appeared in only four contests a year ago before injuries put her on the sidelines. She made 3-of-6 shots from the field and also had an assist and steal in 16 minutes.
Senior
Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, NH) led Western New England College with 14 points along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Sophomore forward
Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) added 12 points (5-for-8 from the field) in a reserve role. Freshman center
Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) contributed eight points coming off the bench.
Senior forward
Caitlin Powers (Scotia, NY) saw her first action after missing six games with an injury and scored two points with three rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot in 11 minutes.
Smith, Al-Darraji, and Powers were honored before the opening tip as part of the Senior Day activities.
Gordon had three players in double figures with senior forward
Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, NY) compiling a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Heather DeKleine (Wayland, MI) netted 10 points, pulled down eight rebounds, dished out three assists, and had three steals. Senior guard
Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, NJ) also tallied 10 points.
Western New England College shot 41.1% from the field compared to 31.4% for the Fighting Scots.. The Golden Bears also held a 42-35 edge off the boards.
