CLERMONT, Fla
. -- The Western New England College softball team opened its 2010 season with losses against The College of New Jersey (11-2 in six innings) and Wesleyan (6-5) Saturday night (March 13) at the National Training Complex.

The contests, originally scheduled for the morning, were pushed back into the evening after rain wiped out competition for several of the other schools in the tournament on Friday.

The Golden Bears managed only five hits against TCNJ senior Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ) who walked one and struck out six in the opener. Junior first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) walked, singled, and scored both runs for the Golden Bears (which were unearned).

WNEC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Breault walked, went to second on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA).

The Lions (7-1) scored four times in both the second and third innings, and added three runs in the sixth for the victory.

Senior Victoria Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) took the loss.

In the nightcap, Wesleyan scored a pair of runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Only two of the runs were earned following five errors by the Golden Bears.

Western New England College rallied with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, but left the tying run on base as the contest ended after midnight.

Breault had another productive game with two hits, a run-batted-in, and stolen base.

Freshman pinch-hitter/second base player Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) had a single and double in both her at-bats with a RBI, and two runs scored.

Sophomore Ashley Stolarik (Wilbraham, MA) knocked in two runs with a double.

Sophomore left fielder Meagan Riemann (Dayville, CT) was the losing pitcher.
