Endicott outlasts Western New England College in TCCC doubleheader marathon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
-- The Endicott softball team outlasted Western New England College 10-4 and 9-8 in a doubleheader marathon that ended in the dark Thursday (Apr. 15). The Gulls improved their record to 20-10 overall and 13-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) while the Golden Bears fall to 18-13 and 13-3 in the league.

Endicott got off to a fast start in the opener scoring six runs and coasting to the win.

Junior right fielder Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT) and freshman catcher Krista Fales (Melrose, MA) each had three hits.

Senior shortstop Jenna Lazar (Milton, MA) had two hits and three runs-batted-in while freshman Byrne Katz (Trumbull, CT) belted a solo homer in the third. Junior pitcher Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, MA) gave up nine hits, but allowed only one earned run with two strikeouts and two walks to improve to 11-5.

Western New England College sophomore designated player Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) had two singles and a double, and scored two runs. Freshman shortstop Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) contributed a single and double.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) gave up eight runs and eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks in dropping her first game of the season in six decisions.

In the nightcap, Bortolotti survived a three-run seventh getting the last out with the tying run on first to gain the win in relief. She allowed five hits and three unearned runs in 4 2/3 innings while striking out two with no walks.

The Gulls again struck early taking a 4-0 lead in the first and 8-0 advantage in the top of the third before the Golden Bears rallied with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Junior center fielder Ashley Wright (Merrimack, NH) singled and smacked a two-run homer in the first. 
Freshman first base player Nicole Devlin (Dudley, MA) also slugged a two-run homer in the first and had a sacrifice fly for three RBI.

Hovhanessian and freshman shortstop Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, CT) each chipped-in with a pair of hits.

WNEC collected 12 hits highlighted by a three-run homer by senior center fielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) in the third. Longo had another two-hit outing while senior first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA) had two singles. 

Sophomore pitcher Meagan Riemann (Thompson, CT) (6-6) took the loss.
