Nor'easters storm past Western New England College twice in conference contests

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting University of New England 3-1 and 4-2 Sunday afternoon (Apr. 18).

The Golden Bears have lost five straight contests in falling to 18-15 overall and 13-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Nor'easters improve to 21-9 and 14-4 in the league.

Junior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, MA) tossed a four-hitter in the opener allowing only one walk. The run scored against her in the second inning was unearned.

Sophomore third base player Marie Mantilli (Thompson, CT) had an RBI single that helped give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the first inning. She also doubled in the game. Sophomore catcher Ashley Gott (Winterport, ME) contributed an RBI double in the fifth and scored a run.

The Nor'easters committed six errors, but the Golden Bears couldn't get the key hit when needed in leaving nine runners on base.

Sophomore designated player Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) had a double while senior Victoria Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) (5-4) was the losing pitcher.

Mantilli homered off the left field foul pole to lead-off the fifth for the first run of the game in the second contest.

UNE added three runs in the seventh with an RBI single by senior left fielder Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, RI), one of the big plays in the inning.

The Nor'easters finished with 14 hits with sophomore center fielder Maegen Johnson (Standish, ME) going 4-for-5 and senior first base player Angie Damon (Scarborough, ME) who added three hits and a run.

Western New England College scored both its runs in the seventh as senior second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) had an RBI single. Freshman pinch-hitter Laura Madaio (Paxton, MA) knocked in the other run with a ground-out.

Sophomore designated player Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) had two hits and scored a run. Junior catcher Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) also singled twice.

Lempicki took the loss as her record dropped to 5-2.
