BEVERLY, Mass. - A strong showing in singles play lifted the Western New England College men's tennis team to a dramatic 5-4 victory over host Endicott Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 7).
The win gave the Golden Bears an overall record of 4-6 and 4-2 mark in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Gulls also are 4-6 and 1-3 in the conference.
Endicott captured all three doubles and the top singles matches before the Golden Bears rallied by winning the number two through six singles flights.
Junior
Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) took a 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 win over junior Devon Locke (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) at the number two singles spot to complete the comeback.
Freshman
Chris Holzinger (Foster, RI) had a straight set win (6-1, 6-3) at the number three position.
Sophomore
JonPaul Ouellette (Bethlehem, CT) posted a tie-break win at number four singles (6-2, 7-6, 7-2 while junior
Travis Orszulak (Springfield, MA) came through with a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 decision at number five singles.
In another exciting match, junior
Matt Minahan (Plymouth, MA) delivered a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory at the number six flight.
