BRISTOL, R.I. - Senior forward
Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, CT) made a free throw with six seconds left in overtime as the Roger Williams men's basketball team survived upset-minded Western New England 73-72 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Tuesday night (Jan. 11) at the Campus Rec Center.
Petruccelli finished with 13 points for the Hawks who improved their record to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. WNEC drops to 0-12 and 0-2 in league play.
RWU appeared to have won the game in regulation when senior guard
Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, CA) sank two foul shots for a 62-58 lead with six seconds left on the clock.
Western New England junior guard
Andre Shaw (New York, NY) made a three-pointer and was fouled with a second remaining. He made the free throw to send the game into an extra session. Shaw also connected on a three-pointer with a second left in overtime to account for the final points of the contest.
The Golden Bears started the game with a 9-0 run before the Hawks came back to take a 25-24 advantage at halftime. Roger Williams held its biggest lead at 45-37 following a jumper by junior center
Pat Flanagan (Somerville, MA) at the 10:29 mark.
Flanagan led the hosts with 17 points and six rebounds while Fava added 16 points.
Senior forward
Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) had a great game for the Golden bears with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Shaw contributed 18 points and had a game high three treys.
Freshman forward
Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) had his best outing of the season with 15 points. Senior guard
Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
