SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward
Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds as Western New England held on for a 73-66 victory over Emerson in non-conference action Thursday (Jan. 13) night at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Golden Bears improve to 9-4 on the year while the Lions slip to 3-11.
Western New England sophomore center
Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) contributed 14 points while junior forward
Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) contributed a season high 10 points (5-for-5 from the field) along with six rebounds from a reserve role.
Sophomore forward
Olivia DiNucci (Pittsburgh, PA) delivered a game-high 22 points for Emerson and grabbed five rebounds.
Senior guard
Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA) became just the second player in program history to top the 1,000 point mark, finishing with a total of 19 in the contest. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lions jumped to a nine-point lead (13-4) five minutes into the contest before the Golden Bears came back to take a 29-28 lead he break.
Emerson held another nine-point advantage at 48-39 with 123:08 remaining before Proper sparked the comeback with six straight points to give Western New England a 54-51 lead at the 7:08 mark. The Lions got within 61-60 following two free throws by freshman guard
Elissa Chojnicki (Dover, NH), but a free throw by McCormick and basket by Radzikowski made it a four-point game (64-60 with 3:08 left) and the visitors couldn't catch up.
Both squads shot the ball well from the field as Western New England shot 49.1% and Emerson shot 44.7%. The Golden Bears enjoyed a 38-24 advantage on the boards.
Western New England returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 15) at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to take on conference rival Endicott.
