AUBURN, Mass. - Junior forward John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) recorded a hat trick to lead the Worcester State men's hockey team to a 6-3 non-league victory over Western New England Saturday evening (Jan. 15) at the Daniel Horgan Memorial Ice Rink.

The Lancers (7-3-3) unleashed a 59-shot attack and tallied four power play goals in six attempts.

Freshman forward Brian Prost (Parma, OH) gave Western New England a 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season at 13:57 of the first period.

Worcester State then scored four goals in the second period (three on power plays) and that proved to be the difference.

The hosts led 3-1 before freshman forward John Kelly (Long Island, NY) pulled the Golden Bears within one at the 14:13 mark. Cahalane's second power play goal at 18:49 gave the Lancers a 4-2 advantage heading into the final period.

Cahalane netted his third goal of the contest just 1:33 into the period before junior forward Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) scored a short-handed goal at 6:16 for a 6-2 advantage. Asterito finished with two goals and an assist.

Kelly added his second goal at 11:53, but the Golden Bears couldn't make up the difference. He also had an assist for a three-point outing.

Junior forward Mike Kaselouskas (East Longmeadow, MA) contributed two assists while Prost and freshman defender Cam Napolitan (East Longmeadow, MA) also had assists.

Freshman goalie Eric Sorenson (Rochester, NY) compiled 53 saves in a solid performance.

Western New England (4-10-1) was 0-for-4 in power play opportunities.

Sophomore defender Tim Bowman (Moorpark, CA), and freshman forwards Brendan Galley (Colorado Springs, CO) and Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN) each chipped-in with a pair of assists. Junior goalie Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) stopped 23 shots.

Earlier this season, Western New England and Worcester State skated to a 3-3 overtime tie at the Pepperidge Farm Face-Off Classic hosted by WSU.
