Nichols tops Western New England 62-48 for first win in conference play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– Senior forward Jessica Nelson (North Providence, RI) recorded a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Nichols to a 62-48 win over Western New England to earn its first victory in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Thursday (Jan. 27) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Nichols senior guard Ashley Robidoux (Milford, MA) converted the first basket of the game to notch her 1,000 career point. She finished the game with 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Bison took a 32-20 lead into the halftime break.

Western New England battled back and held a 45-41 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining only to see the Bison close out the game with a 21-3 run to secure the victory.

Nichols held a 49-35 edge on the boards and enjoyed an 18-6 advantage in second chance points.

Senior forward Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) led Western New England with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) contributed nine points off the bench.

The Bison improve to 7-10 (1-5 TCCC) while the Golden Bears slip to 10-7 (2-4 TCCC).

Western New England will travel to the University of New England in a TCCC contest on Saturday (Jan. 29) at 1:00 p.m.
