CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Western New England ran its winning streak to five games with a 31-0 victory over MIT in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division contest Saturday (Oct. 15) at Steinbrenner Stadium.

Freshman running back Kevin Cook (Hamburg, NJ) rushed for a season-high 135 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week as the Golden Bears remained unbeaten in the division at 5-0 while improving to 6-1 overall. The Engineers, who dropped two prior games by a total of five points, fall to 1-5 and 0-4 in Boyd play.

Senior quarterback Bryce Brown (Guilford, CT) directed the Golden Bears to their second best offensive showing of the year with 429 yards, including a season high 301 on the ground. He completed 14-of-22 passes for 147 yards, and ran for 56 yards and two scores.

Western New England took a 10-0 lead at halftime after a season-best 42-yard field goal by freshman Nick Fox-Edele (Springfield, MA) with 46 seconds left in the first period and a 49-yard run by Cook on fourth-and-one with just 1:08 remaining in the second quarter.

WNE's defense, meanwhile, kept the Engineers in their own territory for the opening half and intercepted two passes in the game raising its total to 16 for the season.

Junior linebacker James Kravic (Red Hook, NY) recorded his first career interception, which led to Fox Edele's field goal.

Western New England scored on the first possession of the second half when junior Brendon Thompson (Enfield, CT) returned the kickoff 44 yards to the MIT 42. Twelve plays later Brown scored on a one-yard run for a 17-0 advantage.

MIT advanced to the visitors' 30 on the next series, but lost the ball on downs. Following a WNE punt, the Engineers turned the ball over when junior linebacker Dave Micu (Bedford, MA) also came up with his first career interception.

Cook added a one-yard run and Brown scored from four yards out in the final period to complete the scoring.

The Golden Bears allowed only 149 yards for their second best defensive effort of the season in posting the team's first shutout since 2006.

Sophomore defensive tackle Kevin Soule (Medfield, MA) helped lead the way with a team-high 11 tackles, which include two-and-a-half stops for losses. He also had a sack and forced fumble. Senior defensive tackle Rob Kampson (West Islip, NY) contributed six tackles.

Thompson had a game-high five receptions for 44 yards.

Sophomore punter John Krafick (New Milford, CT) had a nice outing averaging 37.5 yards for six punts with a long of 49 and two kicks inside the 20.

MIT's best chance for a score came late in the game when freshman Brad Goldsberry (Elizabeth, CO) returned a kickoff 83 yards following Brown's score to the six.

Freshman back Justin Wallace (Palatine, IL) ran four times, but was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the one by Kampson and senior defensive end Scott Wojciechowski (Adams, MA) with less than five minutes left.

Wallace led the Engineers with 74 yards on 20 carries while Goldsberry had 165 yards on five returns. Sophomore linebacker Jake Laux (Dousman, WI) compiled 18 tackles with one-and-a-half for losses along with a sack.

Sophomore quarterback John Wenzel (Mandeville, LA) finished just 4-for-14 passing for 33 yards while gaining only 25 yards on 13 rushing attempts. He entered the contest fourth in the NEFC in total offense (183.4 avg.),
