NEWPORT, R.I. – A strong showing fell just short as the Western New England women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Salve Regina Friday afternoon (Oct. 7) at the Leroy Avenue courts.

The Seahawks open the match by winning two of the three doubles matches and stretched the lead to 4-1 before the Golden Bears took the next two singles events to cut the margin to one point.

Junior Shannon O'Brien (Gorham, ME) then captured the number four singles flight to seal the victory. She also teamed with senior Nichol Stevens (Chester, CT) for a win at number two doubles.

Western New England received strong performances from seniors Caitlin Hughes (Springfield, MA) and Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, MA) who posted an 8-2 victory at number one doubles.

Hughes also took her number one singles flight by the score of 6-4, 6-2. DeSimone posted a well-earned 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at number two singles.

Senior Jessica Haffner (Suffield, CT) gained the other point for the Golden Bears with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at number three singles.

Salve Regina improves to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) after winning for the fifth time in its last six contests.

The Golden Bears are now 4-5 and 2-5 in the conference heading into Saturday's final match of the regular season at noon Saturday (Oct. 8) against Eastern Nazarene in Springfield.
