Western New England drops 4-2 decision to defending ECAC Northeast champion Curry

MILTON, Mass. –Senior forward Payden Benning (Estevan, Saskatchewan) scored the game-winner at 17:52 of the final period and junior forward Casey Brugman (Winthrop, MA) added an empty net goal with 29 seconds left to lift Curry to a 4-2 victory over Western New England Saturday (Nov. 19).

The Colonels are now 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the ECAC Northeast. The Golden Bears have a 3-2 record and 1-1 mark in the league.

Western New England never led in the contest, but gave the defending ECAC champs all they could handle.

Curry took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Ian DeLong (Kutztown, PA) scored at 12:54 of the opening period.

Western New England tied the game when freshman defenseman Adam Bristol (Carmel, IN) tallied his first collegiate goal at the 9:33 mark of the second stanza. The assists went to sophomore forward John Kelly (Long Island, NY) and freshman defenseman Aaron Ziegler (Schwonksville, PA).

The Colonels quickly regain the lead on a goal by senior forward Steven Mohler (Yorba Linda, CA) just 2:03 later.

The Golden Bears again came back with the tying goal when sophomore forward Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN) hit the back of the net just 2:30 into the final period. Sophomore forward Dan Monahan (Monroe, NY) had the assist.

WNE couldn't capitalize on three power play opportunities before Benning fired in the winning shot with an assist from senior defenseman Ryan Barlock (Chicago, IL).

Senior forward Josh Kamrass (Norcross, GA) and sophomore defenseman Joshua Pineiro (Huntington, CA) each contributed two assists for the hosts. Freshman goalie Derek Mahoney (Amherst, MA) stopped 22 shots to improve to 3-0.

Western New England sophomore Eric Sorenson (Fairport, NY) had a solid effort with 39 saves.
