WENHAM, Mass. – Freshman forward
Sam McCann (Warren, MA) scored 15 points in her first varsity start to lead the Western New England women's basketball team to a 63-52 victory over Gordon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams Wednesday evening (Nov. 30).
McCann made 5-of-8 shots from the field and pulled down eight rebounds as the Golden Bears evened their record at 2-2.
Also scoring in double figures were sophomore guard
Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) with 11 points, and senior forward
Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) and junior center
Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) each with 10. Proper also chipped-in with five assists and four rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Shaylyn Sicard (Westfield, MA) had her best outing of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds along with seven points, six assists, and four steals.
Western New England, which led 32-24 at halftime, shot 47.7% from the field and held a 41-30 advantage off the boards. The Golden Bears also had assists on 20 of their 21 baskets.
Freshman forward
Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, NJ) led the Fighting Scots with a game-high 20 points. She sank 8-of-14 field-goal attempts and had five rebounds. Freshman guard
Aly Towle (Rochester, NH) contributed seven points, five assists, and three steals.
Gordon drops to 3-2 after having its two-game win streak ended.
