Curry breaks game open early for 9-4 win over Western New England in ECAC contest

MILTON, Mass.
- The Curry men's hockey team scored five times in the opening period in taking a 9-4 victory over Western New England Thursday evening (Jan. 29).

The Colonels, who dropped a 6-5 overtime decision to the Golden Bears back on November 18 in Springfield, lead the ECAC Northeast with a 6-1-2 record and are 10-7-3 overall. Western New England drops to 5-14-1 and 2-6 in the league.

Junior forward Payden Benning (Estevan, SK) and freshman center Michael Lopez (Newton, MA) each scored twice for the Colonels. Senior defenseman Sean Mahoney (Canton, MA) and junior defenseman Ryan Barlock (Chicago, IL) each contributed three assists.

Western New England took an early 1-0 lead when freshman forward Chris Connors (Albany, NY) scored on a power play goal just 1:54 into the contest. Freshman defenseman Eric Gethers (Ashburn, VA) and freshman forward John Kelly (Long Island, NY) earned the assists.

Curry answered with five goals for a 5-1 lead after the first stanza. Benning scored at 5:20 of the middle period  and Lopez tallied both his goals in a 46-second span early in the third period for a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Kelly and junior forward Mike Kaselouskas (East Longmeadow, MA) fired in goals at 9:24 and 10:17, respectively. Benning netted his final goal just 33 seconds later and Western New England freshman forward Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN) scored the final goal at the 13:55 mark.

Connors also had an assist for a two-point outing with Kelly. Freshman forward Dan Monahan (Monroe, NJ) chipped-in with an assist, which was the fifth straight game he has scored a point.

Curry freshman goalie David Arman (Souderton, PA) compiled 19 saves for his first collegiate win.

Sophomore T.J. Fatse (Hampden, MA) stopped 13 shots and gave up four goals before being replaced by freshman Eric Sorenson (Fairport, NY) who finished with 36 saves.
