CLERMONT, Fla. - The Western New England College softball team opened its 2011 campaign with losses against The College of New Jersey (9-2) and Babson (19-9 in five innings) Saturday morning (Mar. 12) at the National Training Center.

Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) belted a two-run homer to left-center in the bottom of the first inning.

Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a walk.
The Lions took the lead for good in the third inning as junior outfielder
Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ) legged out a three-run inside-the-park home run for a 5-2 margin.
Freshman pitcher
Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ) picked up the win, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Junior pitcher
Meagan Riemann (Dayville, CT) suffered the loss for Western New England.
In the second game, Babson scored 13 runs in the top of the third inning to break the game open. Sophomore shortstop
Katie Funk (Scarborough, ME) went 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Freshman infielder
Maria Francese (Dalton, MA) had a 3-for-4 performance for the Golden Bears with three runs and a pair of RBI in her first collegiate start.

Western New England has two games on Sunday (Mar. 13) at the National Training Center, taking on Ripon (WI) at 1:30 p.m. and Bethel (MN) at 3:30 p.m.
