CLERMONT, Fla. – The Western New England softball team earned a split on the third day of competition at the National Training Center (NTC), falling 10-2 to SUNY Plattsburgh before defeating Wisconsin Lutheran, 6-5, for their first win of the season on Monday (Mar. 14) afternoon.
In the first game of the day, Western New England struggled to string together hits against Plattsburgh's junior pitcher
Heather Loughran (East Rockaway, NY).
The Cardinals (5-0) had a balanced attack, with five players recording multiple hits in the contest.
Sophomore centerfielder
Laura Madaio (Paxton, MA) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. She was the only Golden Bear with a multi-hit game.
Junior designated player
Ashley Stolarik (Wilbraham, MA) had an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Western New England stranded seven runners on base, and committed four errors on the day.
In the second game, junior pitcher
Meagan Riemann (Dayville, CT) earned the victory by pitching a complete game with five strikeouts.
The Golden Bears were led offensively by senior catcher
Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) who went 4-for-4 with three RBI's, and junior designated player
Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI.
Junior right fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) also had a solid game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Western New England now stands at 1-5 on the year, and returns to action on Wednesday (Mar. 16) facing Bowdoin (9:30 a.m.) and UMass-Boston (11:30 a.m.) at the National Training Center.
