CLERMONT, Fla. – The Western New England softball team split a pair of games at the National Training Center (NTC) on Wednesday (Mar. 16) morning. The Golden Bears opened up the day with a win over Bowdoin (6-2), before falling to UMass-Boston (3-0) in the second contest.
Western New England received a solid pitching effort from junior pitcher
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) who went the distance, holding the Polar Bears to just eight hits on the day. Obin struck out three, earning a victory in her first start of the year.
The Golden Bears offense was led by junior outfielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) who belted a solo home-run in the top of the 6th, and drove in a pair of runs an inning later on a single to left-center.
Wyrwa went 3-for-4 on the day with four RBI's.
Senior first baseman
Tricia Breault (Millville, MA) scored a pair of runs, including the first of the day after stinging a triple to right centerfield. Breault was driven home by Wyrwa in the top of the third.
In the second game of the day, the Golden Bears were held scoreless by UMass-Boston senior pitcher
Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) who pitched a complete game allowing just three hits.
Senior centerfielder
Christina Polsonetti (Revere, MA) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.
Breault had two of the three hits for the Golden Bears, with senior third baseman
Angela Monaco (Monroe, CT) recording the other.
Junior pitcher
Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) was lights-out in relief, striking out six in just three innings of work.
Western New England now stands at 2-6 on the year, and will close out its Florida trip on Thursday (Mar. 17) against Wesleyan (9:30 a.m.) and SUNY Geneseo (1:30 p.m.) at the NTC athletic complex.
