Western New England closes out Florida trip with split against Wesleyan and Geneseo

CLERMONT, Fla.
– The Western New England softball squad closed out its Florida trip with a split, defeating Wesleyan (7-6) before falling to SUNY Geneseo (2-1) in a tough loss at the National Training Center (NTC) on Thursday (Mar. 17).

The Golden Bears posted an impressive 7-6 victory over Wesleyan (6-6) led by junior outfielder Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) who went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI's.

Wyrwa finished the trip batting .529 (18-of-34), with a pair of homeruns, seven doubles, and 13 RBI's.

Western New England put up five runs in the bottom of the 3rd to overcome a 4-1 Wesleyan lead and would never look back.

Senior first baseman Tricia Breault (Millville, MA) started the rally, and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the lead-off spot. Freshman third baseman Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) was 2-of-3 with an RBI on the day.

Junior pitcher Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) went the distance, striking out eight in the contest.

In the afternoon game, SUNY Geneseo overcame a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the 6th to sneak away with a 2-1 win.

Western New England jumped out to an early lead as Lempicki knocked in Breault with a single to centerfield in the top of the third.

Geneseo was led by junior shortstop KK Schaus (Williamsville, NY) who hit a solo homer to left-center to lead-off the top of the 6th and tie the score a 1-1.

Junior pitcher Mary Bostwick (Depew, NY) picked up the win for the Knights, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts. Junior pitcher Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) was charged with the loss for Western New England, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings and striking out two.

The Golden Bears leave the National Training Center with a 3-7 record, and are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 23) with a double-header at the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener for both teams.
