SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England men's tennis team opened its home season with an 8-1 victory over city rival American International Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 22). The Golden Bears improved their record to 4-2 with their fourth straight win.
Western New England captured all six singles matches.
Senior co-captains
Brian Relihan (Orange, CT) and
Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) won their number one (6-2, 6-2) and two singles (6-3, 6-1) matches, respectively, in straight sets, and teamed for an 8-1 victory at the top doubles spot.
The Golden Bears posted a win at number three doubles as senior
Matt Minahan (Plymouth, MA) and junior
Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) also posted an 8-1 decision.
Also winning singles matches were junior
JonPaul Ouellette (Bethlehem, CT) at the number three position (4-6, 6-2, 10-7), Minahan at the number four spot (6-2, 6-3), senior
Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) at the number five flight (6-0, 6-3), and Fitzpatrick at the number six spot (6-3, 6-2).
The Yellow Jackets' only point came at number two doubles where sophomore
Jakub Simicek (Treneinska Turna, Slovenia) and senior
Mike Little (Enfield, CT) posted an 8-5 win.
This was the season opener for American International.
