SPRINGFIELD, Mass.
– The Western New England softball team could not overcome an early deficit as Amherst came away with a 5-2 victory on Friday (Mar. 25) afternoon in a non-league match-up.

Amherst (7-4) jumped out to an early lead on a lead-off homerun to left field by sophomore pitcher Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA).

The Lord Jeffs increased their advantage to 5-0 on a three-run homerun by sophomore designated player Reilly Horan (Darien, CT). The clutch hit came with two outs, capitalizing on the lone error of the game for the Golden Bears.

Western New England (3-8) battled back in the bottom half of the fourth, as sophomore shortstop Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) belted a two-run triple to right field scoring junior catcher Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) and senior designated player Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) on the play.

Kelley went the distance for Amherst, holding the Golden Bears to just three hits and striking out nine to pick up the win.

Sophomore pitcher Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, CT) kept the Golden Bears close down the stretch with two perfect innings of relief.
