MILTON, Mass. - Junior right-fielder Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) walloped a grand slam homer in the seventh inning to help give the Western New England softball team to an 11-1 victory in six innings over Curry in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 26) at D.Forbes Will Field. The Colonels pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 win in the opener.
These were the opening games for Western New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Golden Bears are 4-9 overall. Curry has a 6-8 record and 3-1 mark in the conference.
Game 1 - Curry 6, Western New England 5
Western New England scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game before sophomore shortstop Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, MA) singled in the winning run with two outs. She also had a double in the game and finished 4-for-4 with a run. Curry took a 5-2 lead in the sixth with a two-run double by freshman third baseman Megan Flaherty (Medway, MA) the big hit.
The Golden Bears had a 10-8 advantage in hits with senior first base player Trish Breault (Millville, MA), junior left-fielder Ashley Stolarik (Wilbraham, MA) and sophomore shortstop Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) each collecting a single and double with a run and RBI.
Freshman Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, MA) picked-up the win with a complete game effort. Sophomore Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, CT) took the loss.
Game 2 - Western New England 11, Curry 1 (6 innings)
The Golden Bears continued their strong hitting with 11 hits as everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Breault led the way with a single, double, two runs, and a pair of RBI. Freshman third base player Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) also had a single, double, and scored a run.
Junior Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) allowed only three hits and no earned runs in a complete game performance. She didn't walk anyone and struck out eight in evening her record at 2-2.
Curry scored its only run in the sixth when junior center-fielder Stacy Norton (Alfred, ME) had a lead-off double and and later scored on an error. Senior Janelle Mayo (Worcester, MA) was the losing pitcher.
