WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior right-fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) and junior pitcher/designated player
Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) combined for six hits, seven runs, and nine RBI in leading the Western New England softball team to a 14-5 victory over host Westfield State Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 12).
Wyrwa went 3-for-3 with two homers, four runs scored, and five RBI while Lempicki also had three hits with a double, homer, three runs, and four runs-batted-in. Wyrwa now has 10 home runs and 47 RBI with just two strikeouts in 28 games and leads the Golden Bears with a .516 average.
Both set the tone early when Wyrwa belted a three-run homer and Lempicki a solo blast for a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Golden Bears added three runs in the third to extend their advantage to 7-0.
The Owls quickly got back into the game with four runs in the bottom of the third before Western New England opened up a five-run lead scoring twice in the fourth on a two-run double by Lempicki.
The Golden Bears (16-12 with a five-game win streak) tallied five more runs in the seventh and the game was called after six innings when Westfield managed only a single run in the inning for the final score.
Freshman second base player
Maria Francese (Dalton, MA) reached base four times with a pair of singles and walks. She also scored four runs. Sophomore shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) added two hits, a run scored, and RBI.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) two a scoreless fourth and fifth, and didn't allow any hits while striking out one, to gain the win.
Freshman shortstop
Bri Eichstaedt (Southampton, MA) had three hits, two runs, and a pair of RBI for the Owls who fall to 11-12.
