PAXTON, Mass. – Junior pitcher
Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) hit two home runs and pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Western New England to a sweep over Anna Maria in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play on Saturday (Apr. 16) afternoon.
The Golden Bears took game one 10-0 in six innings, and won game two 6-4 with a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
Western New England now stands at 20-12 overall with a 14-4 record in conference. Anna Maria slips to 14-18 with a 7-13 mark in TCCC play.
Game 1 – Western New England 10, Anna Maria 0 (6 inn.)
Lempicki continued her impressive play on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 batters.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring in the second on a three-run double by senior first baseman
Tricia Breault (Millville, MA). She was 2-for-4 with four RBI's and a run scored.
Lempicki then hit a solo homer to left-center for the fourth run of the inning.
WNEC added a pair of runs in the fourth, and closed things out with four runs in the sixth.
Sophomore third baseman
Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) had a two-run double in the sixth to help seal the game.
Junior left-fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA) had a run-scoring scoring in the sixth to set a school record for RBI in a season (54).
Game 2 – Western New England 6, Anna Maria 4 (8 inn.)
The AMCATS got on the board with an unearned run in the third, to take a 1-0 lead. They tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by senior center-fielder
Emily Nugent (Worcester, MA) to go ahead 2-0.
The Golden Bears answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, as Lempicki smashed a three-run home run for her second of the day.
Anna Maria knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth on a solo home run by senior second baseman
Allyssa Boykin (Worcester, MA).
The Golden Bears scored in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Breault to score senior catcher
Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA).
The AMCATS tied the game on a solo homerun by junior left fielder Mary Moroski (Worcester, MA).
Sophomore shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) singled home the winning run for Western New England. Wyrwa added two hits to move her batting average to a team-high .514.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) tossed a perfect eighth inning to record the win.
Western New England returns to action on Sunday (Apr. 17) at 2:00 p.m. to host Regis in TCCC play.
