SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England gets back on track with 8-0 (6 inn.), 9-4 doubleheader sweep of New England College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) home opener for the Golden Bears on Saturday (Apr. 2) afternoon.
Western New England improves to 7-11 with a 3-3 mark in TCCC play. New England College slips to 2-10 and now stands at 1-3 in conference.
Game 1 – Western New England 8, New England College 0 (6 inn.)
Western New England jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the home half of the first, as RBI singles by junior pitcher
Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) and senior catcher
Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, MA) helped capitalize on three Pilgrim errors in the inning.
Freshman second baseman
Maria Francese (Dalton, MA) belted her first career home-run to straight away centerfield to push the Golden Bears lead to 5-0 after two innings.
Sophomore shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior right fielder
Bethany Forshaw (Waterford, CT) collected two of the three total hits for the Pilgrims.
Western New England tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
Lempicki earned the win, allowing just one hit and striking out four in five innings of work.
Game 2 – Western New England 9, New England College 4
New England College struck first in the second game, taking to a 2-0 advantage on a two run double to left center by sophomore second baseman
Meghan Beausoliel (Littleton, NH).
The Golden Bears came storming back with six runs in the bottom of the third; highlighted by senior first baseman
Tricia Breault (Millville, MA) smacking her first career homerun to right field to lead-off the inning.
Breault went a perfect 4-for-4 from the lead-off spot in game two.
Freshman third baseman
Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) plated the final two runs of the inning with a double to right center.
Western New England scored three more in the bottom of the fourth, as junior left fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) got the inning started with her team-leading sixth homerun of season.
The Pilgrims plated a run in the sixth on a solo homerun by senior first baseman
Melinda Robbins (Oxford, MA).

Meagan Rieman (Dayville, CT) earned the win, allowing two hits in four innings of work.
