SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England men's tennis team upended visiting Endicott 5-4 in a battle of previously unbeaten teams in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 6).
The Golden Bears remain perfect in the conference with a 5-0 mark and improve to 9-2 overall following their ninth consecutive victory. The Gulls drop to 6-4 following their first TCCC loss in five outings.
Senior co-captains
Brian Relihan (Orange, CT) and
Mike Jones (Stone Ridge, NY) led the way by capturing three critical points.
They combined for an 8-4 decision at number one doubles to improve their record to 9-1 this spring.
Relihan also posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top singles spot while Jones took a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 victory at number two singles.
"The match came down to Mike winning his singles match," said Western New England coach
Jennifer Kolins. "He has played Devon Locke six times in four years and this was only the second time he beat him."
Western New England swept the doubles action for their other two points as sophomore
Chris Holzinger (Foster, RI) and junior
Jon Paul Ouellette (Bethlehem, CT) took an 8-5 win at the number two position. Senior
Matt Minahan (Plymouth, MA) and junior
Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, NY) held on for an 8-6 win at number three doubles.
Winning singles matches for Endicott were sophomore
Oliver Joggi (Stoneham, MA) at the number three spot (7-5, 6-3), freshman
Zach Arpey (Saratoga Springs, NY) at the fourth flight (6-2, 6-3), freshman
Evan Ross (Worcester, MA) at the fifth position (6-4, 6-4), and sophomore
Jake Cohen (Barrington, RI) at number six (6-4, 6-3).
