BOSTON, Mass. – The Western New England softball team cruised to a pair of five inning victories 8-0 and 14-1 in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) doubleheader sweep of Wentworth on Saturday (Apr. 9) at Carr Diamond.
The Golden Bears improve to 13-12 with an 8-4 record in TCCC competition. The Leopards fall to 0-27 and are now 0-16 in conference.
Game 1 – Western New England 8, Wentworth 0 (5 inn.)
The Golden Bear offense was again led by junior right fielder
Rachel Wyrwa (Metheun, MA) who went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and four RBI's.
Freshman third baseman
Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) had another solid outing, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Sophomore shortstop
Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-of-3 with a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher
Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, CT) shut down the Leopards to earn the win, allowing just three hits while striking out three. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored.
Game 2 – Western New England 14, Wentworth 1 (5 inn.)
Western New England jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Wyrwa singled home senior first baseman
Tricia Breault (Millville, MA).
Breault went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in game two.
The Leopards tied the score in the bottom of the first on a solo homer from senior third baseman
Lizz Harvey (McConnellsburg, PA).
The Golden Bears took control with three runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
Sophomore right fielder
Jennifer Mears (Amherst, MA) reached base in all four at-bats, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore centerfielder
Laura Madiao (Paxton, MA) was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a pair of runs scored.
Senior left fielder
Erin Griffin (Lowell, MA) went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Western New England closed out the game by plating five more runs in the top of the fifth.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) recorded the win, allowing three hits and striking out a pair.
The Golden Bears return to action on Sunday (Apr. 10), hosting Roger Williams at noon in a TCCC doubleheader.
