SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Smith women's volleyball team opened its season under new coach
Fran Vandermeer by posting a 3-1 victory over host Western New England Tuesday evening (Sept. 6) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Golden Bears, who were making their home debut, took the opening set 25-16 before the Pioneers came back to take the next three games by the scores of 26-24, 25-17, and 25-15.
Sophomore outside hitter
Rosa Drummond (Rye, NH) led the visitors with 21 kills and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Blair Bell (Montclair, NJ) added 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Bethany Ashworth (Monument, MA) contributed 16 digs while sophomore setter
Hayley Bezubka (North Kingstown, RI) chipped-in with 17 assists.
Western New England received 12 kills from freshman outside hitter
Kasey Cameron (Reading, MA) and 10 kills from sophomore outside hitter
Maureen Pollet (Dix Hills, NY). Freshman libero
Grace Kucharski (Avon, CT) had 24 digs. Freshman setter
Val Smith (Norristown, PA) dished out 32 assists.
The Golden Bears are now 2-2 .
